"It's time! We've been laboring for about two hours. We're going to head to the birth center soon."
I rubbed the fog out of my eyes, and rolled out of bed. I heard mama laboring in the background of the call and asked, "Is that her? Is that mama?"
"Yes," he replied over the sounds of her working through a strong contraction.
"You need to go now," I urged strongly. "Get in the car and go now."
I hung up the phone and gathered my go bag, protein bar, and a bottle of water. I went to wake up my husband, bringing him the baby that woke with the phone call.
"I have to go to a birth. Rory is awake. I'm leaving now," I whispered.
"Okay," Brock mumbled.
"Wake up, Brock. I have to leave. What do you want me to do with the baby?" I shook his shoulder.
He rolled away from me and said, "Just give him to Mandy."
"BROCK," I asserted, "This IS Mandy. I have to go to a BIRTH. You need to WAKE UP and TAKE THE BABY."
Brock blinked sleepily and said, "Oh hey. Where are you going??"
I laughed at him as I left the baby with him and rushed out to my car. I hit the road immediately, and noted a 36 minute drive time to the birth center. After just a few moments on the road, birth daddy called me again and said they couldn't get in touch with the midwives. I could tell that they were still not yet driving, so I told him to let ME call the midwives and I would alert them that we were all on the way. I told him to just get in the car and drive, well aware of the 40+ minute drive time ahead of them.
Less than 10 minutes away from the birth center, the midwife called to let me know that the baby was here, and "here" was at home! I laughed and turned around to head to their house and capture a few images of the baby that was in such a rush to arrive!
I walked in to find the most incredible mama nursing her beautiful newborn, smiling with excitement, surprise and not a little bit of wonder at her remarkable morning.
She was so calm, staring intently at her new baby boy that she had just birthed unassisted, the last signs of her solo birth still apparent on her hands.
Big brother woke a few minutes later, and was thrilled to meet his new little best friend.
"Oh, he's so CUTE!" he gushed. It was love at first sight for the whole family.
I left with everyone wrapped up in the bed, enjoying their first day as a family of four.
It was a brilliant morning.
I'm busy working on my blog posts. Watch this space!
